Spring is here!!!

Checkered House Bridge Update:  April 2012

In late February/early March, construction resumed on the Route 2 Checkered House Bridge in Richmond, Vermont.

In the coming months, construction activity will be focused on preparations for widening the bridge (read more about the upcoming bridge widening). Supports for the truss, assembly of pieces needed to move the truss, and all plans and permits are expected to be in place so that the bridge widening can begin early June.

Travelers will continue to use the two-lane temporary bridge throughout the construction season.  On very few occasions traffic will be reduced to one-lane for short periods of time.  News alerts will be issued in advance whenever possible and will be posted on this website.

Note to boaters:  The Winooski River will remain open to boaters during construction except for a few occasions when temporary restrictions are needed for safety reasons.  Whenever possible, advance notice of restrictions will be given on this website.

About the project:

The Vermont Agency of Transportation retained the design build team of Harrison & Burrowes Bridge Constructors of Glenmont, New York and CHA Inc., of Albany, New York to widen the existing bridge while preserving much of its steel structure.

The project is in its second year and will take approximately three years to complete. It also includes the reconstruction and realignment of Route 2, Kenyon Road and Johnnie Brook Road.

In May

  • Construction of temporary bents to support truss widening members [The bents are towers/piers made up of piles which will be driven into the river bottom and will hold the large transverse support beams that will come off the existing truss.]
